Nine years ago, my friend David Kuskie and I started our second internet radio series, “The Dr. J And Dangerous Dave Dog and Pony Show.” It’s a sketch comedy show with hosting segments (and wildly uneven musical numbers) reminiscent of 70’s variety shows.
Today I’m posting a “clip show” we did a few years back. It contains three of our favorite sketches:
- “The Dick Van Tyke Show”. It’s like if a classic 60’s sitcom got “Muppet Babied”. I do the voices of Lil’ Rob, Lil’ Sally and Lil’ Alan Brady. Dave does Lil’ Laura, Lil’ Buddy, and Lil’ Mel Cooley. My impersonation of Dick Van Dyke hinges on the way he says “Oh my gosh”. My Rose Marie though, is totally on point.
- “CSI: Neighborhood of Make Believe”. Who killed X The Owl? The answer will stun you. Or not. I do the voices of Mister Rogers, King Friday, Lady Elaine Fairchild, Mr. McFeely and Henrietta Pussycat. Dave is Bob Dog, who questions all of the other characters about the owlicide. (The original version of this sketch contained the full version of Mister Rogers singing “What Do You Do With The Mad That You Feel” at the end, which was my guilt-induced palate-cleanser after violating all of his characters the way we did.)
- “‘The Godfather’ Book and Record.” A cavalcade of guest voices joins Dave and me in this age-inappropriate story produced for young listeners. Mike Fell, Eli Smith, and Denielle Bennett make up the guest cast.
In addition to the previously used sketches, this episode contains a new musical number as Dave and I, joined by Kalin Krohe and Jeremy Fifield, warble a ragged version of The Beatles’ “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away.” (Kalin and I, on separate occasions, come in too early.) There’s also new bridging material in which the boys try to promote the show via a satellite tour. It does not go well. Jennifer Schmid joins Kalin and Jeremy as our guest cast in the satellite tour sketches.
Here’s the show:
