This is a Halloween post in February. I know a lot of people love Halloween, and I guess I do too. Not the dressing up part. Not the drinking to stupification part. But the “lots of candy being around” part, and the “making radio stuff” part…that’s my jam Halloween-wise.
And so we come to a series of bits I wrote and produced for the ol’ K-Cow many moons ago. This was during the “Kalin is in South Dakota” era, and–by complete coincidence-this was also at a time when Bob S. Bestos was evicted from the basement for some unrevealed violation.
So these bits were made in connection with a contest. The premise is that 20 monsters have camped out in the KCOW basement and each one has a trivia question for our listeners. As morning show host it was my job to go down there, interact with the monsters, and get the envelope with their question.
The contest was a blast–we gave away a ton of Halloween decorations, toys, and novelties from the Johnson Smith catalog. And writing and producing 20 skits was a challenge, but incredibly fun.
This is one of those “cast of thousands” projects…the brilliant Chris Obershaw gets the MVP award for portraying Dracula, Frankenstein, Hannibal Lecter, a Walken-esque Headless Horseman, and the Wolfman–sort of.
Tammy Griffee is hilarious as the Bride Of Frankenstein. Mike Stewart does The Invisible Man-as-Jackass. Dennis Klinker plays Dr, Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Brandon Bell is the Old Mill Ghost, who would have gotten away with it if not for etc. Mike Glesinger as Igor sheepishly explains the absence of the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man. Jennifer Schmid cackles away as the Wicked Witch.
Alice Cooper, Cookie Monster, Kang and Kodos, Freddy Kruegger, Godzilla, King Kong, and Kujo play themselves. Fun with editing!
