I have a few things to chat about on this beautiful late summer Sunday, and just like those little boxes of cereal it comes in convenient single-serve helpings.
First: my pal Dave Kuskie and I have produced an all-new episode of “The Dr. J And Dangerous Dave Dog And Pony Show”, our internet radio variety show which is celebrating its fake 10th anniversary. (We started the show in 2010 but 2020 being the dumpster fire it was, we’re not counting it. Ergo, 10th anniversary.) Some episodes of the show are straight variety, with a musical number followed by comedy sketches. Others, in the grand tradition of Jack Benny, Larry Sanders and “30 Rock” go behind the scenes of the show. This episode is one of those. It’s 11 minutes, which I think is an easy listen compared to some of these podcasts I see out there lumbering in at 2 1/2 hours. And those are just people talking! Whereas our show has music and sound effects and Bullwinkle and hillbillies and…well, here, just listen to it:

The “Happy Days Epics” project rolls on. If it seems like I’ve been cranking those out feverishly, well I’m kind of running against MeTV’s clock. You see, MeTV is now into the post-Richie seasons (not on DVD, not on streaming) and there are three multi-part sagas in those final seasons. So I want to get the final 2 epics with Richie, “Westward Ho” and “Fonzie’s Funeral”, done before the post-Richie sagas come around. A new wrinkle entered the picture when, after a semi-exhausting search of the apartment, I realized I never bought season 6 of the series on DVD. So that is on the way so I can write those. Yes, I spent 15 dollars on this blog. And I spend 5 bucks a month for hosting services. And yet I don’t run a Patreon. Now that’s devotion! Or something.

Friday was National Radio Day. And in addition to being reminded of the many wonderful hours I have spent in front of the microphone, or slaving over a hot Adobe Audition, or writing one-hopes-they’re-funny commercials, I was also reminded of the many lasting friendships I have made in my 23 years at KCOW.
It was 11 years ago this weekend that I attended the wedding of the century, as Mike Glesinger married Sarah. It was a wonderful ceremony and the reception was lots of fun, with the late Chuck Biegler tickling the digital ivories. Gles is just about the nicest guy in the world, which comes as no shock to anybody who’s ever heard him on the radio or met him in person. He and Mrs. G are inseparable!
Celebrating birthdays the week of National Radio Day: Jennifer Schmid, former KCOW Traffic Goddess. Jen was kind of an extra Mom for me during her KCOW years…making sure I had a nice suit to wear for the broadcaster’s convention, keeping me honest on deadlines, and the like. And Helen Iossi, who is now retired but probably still works harder than most “full-time” people including myself. Helen’s kindnesses to all of us at KCOW are too numerous to mention.
And celebrating a birthday on August 23rd is Kalin Krohe. My old pal. Partner in radio shenanigans. We’ve traveled to Lincoln, Deadwood, and Ocean Isle Beach, NC. We’ve delivered a colicky radio baby named Bob S. Bestos. And we’ve done a jillion or so commercials. And he’s still my favorite creative partner. And we bicker like an old married couple.
And those are just four people! And I’ve been lucky enough to know a whole bunch of other nice people through my years with the ol’ K-Cow. And that includes people who start their morning with me! Loyal friends and true!
