This is a story about a young man who loves comic books, and how that same young man loves doing unexpected things on live radio.
Not too long ago I bought a comic book on eBay. It’s a comic book based on the Walt Disney motion picture “Song Of The South”.
All of the characters are there…Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear….annnnnddd….the tar baby.
It was a different time.
Anyway, every weekday Kalin Krohe and I do a live radio segment called “Coffee Talk”, which is basically 5 or 6 minutes of us jabbering on about nothing in particular. Live radio is the greatest thing since sliced bread, you know.
Today we were talking about our recent vacations…Kalin brought back a present for me—“Wheel Of Fortune” socks, which I’ll be wearing to work tomorrow. And I got two tiny presents for the K-Man…the first one…well, I could not make out what exactly the heck it was…and it was around this time that my cellphone started going rumbly rumbly rumbly. For whatever reason, I deciced to put the phone call on the air and see what happened. It sounded on the ol’ K-Cow like this:
Well, after we finished our show, I called Rhonda from Four Color Comics in New York City. Or as they say in the Big Apple, “Foah Cullah Comics”. It turns out that Rhonda wanted me to know that I could save money by buying the funnybooks directly from their website, rather than dealing with all the eBay rigamarole.
This is the front page of their amazing website. They have loads and loads of comic books. Most importantly, they have funny ones. Like Daffy Duck and Uncle Scrooge and Bullwinkle and such. There are millions and millions of people who love the super hero comic books. I’m on the funny side.
So I bought a few funnybooks from Four Color Comics. And had a couple chats with Rhonda to find a certain book I was looking for. Rhonda’s a very nice, friendly lady. And a darn good seller! And she was very nice about being an unplanned radio star. Last but not least, as you heard in the audio clip, she has a mangnificent New York City accent. I’ve had many a friend from NYC with that unique tone of voice. Being from the central New York area I don’t have that same thing.
Some of you may be thinking, “Boy, that was risky to put that lady on the radio live.” A little risk is good for the soul. One of 527 reasons I love live radio is that things can happen to surprise the listener. And the announcer.
