There are some things you learn pretty quickly when you arrive in a new town. One of them is where the best places are to eat. I don’t think I lived in Alliance for more than a month before my first visit to Martin’s Restaurant. My Alliance story is filled with memorable evenings and lunches at Matt’s place. I met Matt, Angelo, Cherry and their family and am proud to count them as my friends. Pat Adriance and I enjoyed many meals there, as did other KCOW friends and family. My Mom and Dad became devotees of Martin’s and we had to have at least one meal there on each of their visits. We even held a Main Street Players improv night performance at the restaurant.
A couple of my favorite nights at Martin’s Restaurant involved Kalin Krohe, Jeremy Fifield and the late Chuck Biegler. During Heritage Days “Chuckie” held court at Martin’s, singing and playing his Clavinova for diners. Sometimes you know how very special a time is, even while enjoying it in the moment. Spending a summer evening shouting out requests to Chuckie, hanging out with Kroheim and Mr. Kite…it was perfection.
Over the years, I had the great fun of writing and producing radio commercials for Martin’s Restaurant. Gles and I did quite a few, then when Kalin came back to KCOW in 2013 we secured Bob S. Bestos his first “celebrity spokesweirdo” position. These are some of my favorite commercials because we were basically tapping into the community’s love and devotion to the restaurant, and Matt and his family. Listen to the silliness and know how much we miss those golden tacos with sizzling beef and fresh crispy-type vegetables….
Best commercials ever…and miss Martins big time…sweet talk Matt into getting back in the biz!!
