It’s been a while since I did this. Here’s some of the commercial work I’ve been doing lately. My “paying” job is as commercial production director. The job has changed substantially over the years as different management philosophies have put more of the actual writing in the hands of account executives. Which I totally get–they are the ones who work with the clients directly and will know what’s best for them. What it means for me is that 15 years ago, I wrote around 80% of the commercials airing on our stations. Now it’s about 20%. But I still get to do some creative work and that’s the stuff I like to share with you.
This first commercial was produced for one of our radio stations in Great Bend, Kansas. I’m big in Great Bend. Well, not at all actually, but I guest hosted the midday shift on their classic rock station for a few days (a global pandemic is what it took to get me airtime out of market but I’ll take it!). And I produced this commercial…see if you figure out what we’re going for here inspiration-wise.
This “doing things for other markets” bit goes both ways. Here’s “DJ Dan” doing a Village Pizza ad for us:
Our good friend Steve Kloch, he of the liquor store where anytime is the right time, had us prepare two new commercials for him. Well, one new and one new-ish. Here’s the new one with Olivia Newton-Boss and Joel Shorman in a lovely little scene:
And here’s a respin on an old spot for Wine Down Wednesday. Gles is a champion pretend-whiner:
And here’s basement-dwelling weirdsmobile Bob S. Bestos in his role as celebrity spokesweirdo for Bloedorn Lumber.
And if Miles reads this: I’ve been very, very sick. Splitting headaches which prevent me from being able to read the clock. I think my continued efforts in the face of this health crisis are admirable.
