Before today’s discussion, a note: Today Herr Kroheim von Lunchheim and I dined at Alliance’s marvelous Dairy Queen. And as promised by DQ owner Wren, my french fries (previously discussed here) were on the house. They were golden, crispy and delicious! The burger was wonderful, and the Orange Julius was tangy and refreshing.
Now, on with the countdown.
My favorite TV channel, MeTV, brightens my evenings with “Andy Griffith”, “WKRP” and “Carol Burnett.” They present the great Svengoolie and his scary movie show Saturday nights, and “The Brady Brunch” Sunday mornings. I love this channel! And now they have a new original series–“Collector’s Call”.
Hosted by Lisa Welchel (Blair of TV’s “The Facts Of Life”–yes, it’s on MeTV), “Collector’s Call” tours the amazing collections of people all over these United States. It’s a fun show, but it appears to focus on people with huge collections of one very narrow focus–on the episode I watched they had a lady with two houses worth of Winnie-the-Pooh items. Which…wow. Way to go Pooh lady!
I have to admire people who decide they are going to collect one thing and laser focus on it for years. But I grew up watching my Pappy collect, and like ol’ Dave, I am unwilling to limit myself to one item! Over the last 20 years (which we shall call “The Era of Disposable Income”) I have enjoyed collecting certain things with great zeal. I always love a good Coca-Cola item…love me some Pez dispensers…a Soaky bubble bath bottle can turn my head…anything coin-op related brings me joy.
There are also things I collected for awhile and stopped…like 1964 New York World’s Fair items, Disneyland high-end collectibles, Happy Meal toys, Fisher-Price Little People sets, etc.
The concern to me with something like an all-Winnie-the-Pooh collection (or, as spotlighted in the next “Collector’s Call” episode, an all-KISS collection) is that one day you might get bored. You might look around at your 3,982 Pooh bears and sigh, “This no longer brings me joy.”
With my wild and varied collections, there are always things that bring me joy. And the things that don’t can go away to closet land. I’ll never be profiled on TV for my collections, but that’s okay. I have a face for radio!
