Larry King used to write a column for the USA Today newspaper consisting of vapid non-sequiturs such as:
“That Charlene Tilton sure is a looker”…”Anybody ever wonder what happens to the airplane peanuts people don’t eat?”…”I’m calling it now: The Yankees will win the penant this year…”
And so forth. So here’s a grab bag of subjects.
I was sorry to hear of the passing of Angelo Martin. I have become very close to the Martins over my 22 years in Alliance…particularly Denise, Matt and his wife Cherry, and Angelo himself. When the restaurant was open Angelo was a fixture in the kitchen. I always looked forward to seeing him and Matt. My thoughts and prayers to the large and close-knit Martin family. They have now lost both the matriarch and the patriarch of their family but the memories will live always.

How are you doing with things Covid-19 wise? I am trying (and largely succeeding) to be calm and follow the “stay home, stay out of groups” advice. Frankly, being in groups was never my thing anyway. But I do like to get out and do things, even simple things like dinner or a movie or a trip to Chadron or the Bluffs. It does break up the monotony. But when it comes to sitting in my apartment for the long haul I’m a champ.
I have been binge-watching “SCTV” videos on YouTube. I have the entire series on DVD, which I treasure, but it’s nice to be able to watch all sort of different sketches and episodes from different seasons at once. (“SCTV” is not available officially on any streaming service because the music rights are insane. It’s a miracle they cleared as much as they did for DVD.)
At work, we are about to take the leap into complete and total isolation…only us three on-air folk will be coming into work; everyone else will work from home. I’m just glad I still get to come in and do the morning show. It’s not a good day without it, and I can’t imagine doing it from my apartment. That just seems weird to me. Not “fun, experiment” weird but “f$%^ing bonkers” weird.
In other news, dot dot dot:
I recently updated my lappy to the newest version of Windows, and surprise! All of the sudden my wifi network isn’t secure enough for their liking. So I bought a new router. I consider buying a new router to be almost as exciting as buying a new toaster. Almost. So I got the new one up and running and it seems like maybe my internet performance is a little better! And my Eggo waffles are a little crispier. (My old router goes back to the George W. Bush administration. Which was another time when a Republican president wanted to send everybody a check. He did multiple times as I recall. No political comment; just a little history.)
And in case anyone cares, no, I’m not going on my vacation April 15th. The various travel entities involved are allowing fairly simple date changes and I’d rather go when things seem safer. I was planning to take the California Zephyr train from Denver to San Francisco, spend 5 nights in San Fran, then train back to Denver. It was a glorious plan. Now it goes down in history as the third aborted vacation attempt in four years. My friend Dave and I were going to Chicago (in #%$%$ing April no less) and were stranded by a blizzard. I was going to go to Los Angeles but ended up being to ill to go. Now, San Fran is a no-go. FOR NOW! As God is my witness, I will get out of the Mountain time zone before December! If you feel it is wrong of me to feel pissy or downhearted about this, just know that I have the mental capacity to both feel rotten about this AND appreciate how trivial it is compared to the larger concerns of the world. The human brain is marvelously confounding in that way.
